Gold Coach and 6 Horses

My last commission of the Lord Mayor's Parade in London, was a bit of a challenge for me, all that beautiful gold decoration and detail was quite daunting to start, but after doing a monochrome sketch, just to get all the legs etc sorted in my head, I approached the final piece with more confidence. This is the result.

Measures a full 20" x 16" on Fabrianno Artistico HP using Karisma pencils. For the the background buildings I used graphite dust blending with cotton buds and fingers.

  1. 'bit of a challenge' is a real understatement I think Bev LOL. Beautiful work and keeping the background muted really makes the colours ping!

Was this a private commission or for the mayoral office?

    1. It was a private commission Sue. The driver is the brother (now passed on) of the woman who commissioned it and the lady who is riding the lead horse is going to be the recipient. She is the owner of the 6 shires pulling the carriage. I am reliably informed that she wont see this as she doesn't do computers :-)

  2. Well done you! I love 'heavy horses' and we're lucky enough to have a couple of breweries nearby that still use Shires for 'occasions'.
I'm guessing these are the Waldburg Shires - handsome beasties and you've done a brilliant job!

Will I see you at Nuneaton Private View?

    1. Thanks Sue. Sadly no, I would have loved to have been there and to meet everyone, but I have an elderly dog and I couldn't leave her for such a long time and have no one to doggy sit. They are a tie, but she gives me a lot of pleasure and I wouldn't be without her.
