Red dahlia

This is a little experiment I did yesterday. Over the years I have accumulated a number of canvases of various sizes, always intending to do some acrylic painting....needless to say I never got around to it. I decided to use one of the smaller canvases to see what I could do with coloured pencil and solvent. Found a lovely photo of a beautiful red dahlia and proceeded to play (which makes a nice change),

Here is the result, which I quite like.

Size: 5" x 7"
Materials: Prismacolour pencils dissolved with Low odour solvent on canvas.

I have carried the image around the edges.

  1. This is beautiful! I love the idea of using coloured pencil on canvas - I've got some lying around that I should try this on myself!

  2. Wonderful! I do colored pencil, but never tried it on canvas. I will give this a try.

  3. Thanks Jess and Barbara. CP on canvas looks awfull by itself, but once you put on a solvent, it takes on another whole dimension. Well worth a try.

  4. Thats a really great idea Bev .... it will be interesting to know how the colour/surface holds up without fixing or putting under glass so perhaps you can update us in a few months' time (assuming you haven't sold it by then of course) :-)

I've been reading Nicole Caulfield's Blog posts about Spraying varnish onto cp works (but doesn't work for Polychromos) to avoid having to glaze pictures.

  5. Hi Sue, yes I will do that. I have decided to enter it into UKCPS exhi with Pauline's prompting so I will definitely be varnishing it, so we will see how well it stands up to being unframed. I think a lot Americans go down this route, Ester Roi for one, I know uses glassless framing: You can find a Tutorial here: http://esterroi.com/blog/2010/04/glassless-framing/

  6. looks fine, and great idea;)
I also want to be able to exhibit without all the glass-framing-fuzz and did some experimenting this week.
It is another process, but I believe it will work for cp too - at least I intend to try it out. You can read about it here (my example is for watercolorpaper): http://a-zoo.blogspot.dk/2012/07/hanging-watercolors-without-glass.html

  7. This looks good Bev, especially as you were just 'playing'! I prefer pictures when they are wrapped around the canvas frame like you have done, it gives the print a continuity feel to it.
